HASTINGS WATER & YOU

Cowarra Dam

The Drip by Peter Allison

For the past 20 years Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has taken a strategic and environmentally approach towards ensuring an adequate water supply for the regions rapidly growing population.

The Cowarra ‘Off Creek Storage’ Dam was built to provide a more drought secure future for our children and to ensure we maintain the health and biodiversity of our beautiful waterways.

The 10,000 megalitre dam is a testament to the council’s vision and commitment to protect and conserve our precious water supply for the Hastings community well into the next century.

As a community we can be proud of the technological ingenuity, commitment to the environment and cultural partnerships that have been so crucial to the overall success of the Cowarra Dam Project.

Cowarra Dam Public Art Project:

As part of the overall design of the Cowarra Dam, a public art project was incorporated to give meaningful recognition to the traditional landowners and to celebrate the co-operative efforts of the Hastings Council and the Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) in the completion of the dam.

Local Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artists created a series of unique artworks that reflect Aboriginal cultural heritage, the importance of water in our lives and celebrate the strong partnerships developed during the construction of the dam.

Project Partners included:
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council and Wauchope Campus, North Coast Institute of TAFE
